Dr Moreetsi Thobega appointed Botswana Examination Council CEO

The Minister of Basic Education Honourable Fidelis Molao and the Botswana Examinations Council (BEC) Board have appointed Dr. Moreetsi Thobega to the position of Chief Executive Officer of BEC with effect from 1st August, 2021.

Dr. Thobega joined BEC in 2010 as Senior Research Officer. He ascended to the position of Director, Research and Policy Development in 2011 responsible for amongst others the design, implementation and conducting of validation studies to inform policy decisions on assessment, operation of the Council and the monitoring of educational and assessment standards.

Dr. Thobega boasts a vast experience spanning over two decades in the areas of teaching, policy advisory, educational management, assessment and research. Before joining BEC, Dr. Thobega held positions of Lecturer and Senior Lecturer at Botswana College of Agriculture (now Botswana University of Agriculture and Natural Resources) where he taught Research Methods, Educational Measurement and Educational Statistics courses to both graduate and undergraduate classes.

Dr. Thobega graduated with Bachelor of Science – Agriculture from Botswana College of Agriculture/University of Botswana in 1994 and a Post Graduate Diploma in Education from the University of Botswana in 1996. He then obtained Master of Science (MSc in Agricultural Education and Studies) and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in the same field from Iowa State University of Science and Technology in United States of America in 2001 and 2006 respectively. He has also attended several professional courses including the Management Development Programme (MDP) from University of Stellenbosch, South Africa in 2012.

On the professional service front, Dr. Thobega is a Chairperson of the Southern African Association of Educational Assessment (SAAEA) and a member of the Executive Committee for the Association of Educational Assessment in Africa (AEAA). He is also a Chairperson of the UNESCO Education Committee and a member of the National Commission for UNESCO. Dr. Thobega is a former member of the Botswana National Productivity Centre Board of Directors.
