The Ministry of Finance and Economic Development is pleased to announce the appointment of Ms. Jeanette Chanda Makgolo as Commissioner General of the Botswana Unified Revenue Service (BURS), for a period of five years, effective 1st August, 2021.
Ms. Makgolo holds a Bachelor of Commerce Degree from the University of Botswana and a post graduate Professional Training in Public Finance Management (Masters Equivalent) from the National Institute of Finance Management in India. She is a seasoned public officer and a veteran accountant who has served the office of the Accountant General for over thirty years, rising to the position of Deputy Accountant General responsible for Compliance and Procurement in July 2018 to July 2021.
During her time in the public service, Ms. Makgolo has actively participated in public service reforms, including the transformation of Public Procurement, an exercise that resulted in the development of the Public Procurement Bill that is currently before Parliament; the review of the Botswana accountancy regulation and oversight legislation which resulted in the enactment of the first ever Financial Reporting Act that established the Botswana Accountancy Oversight Authority (BAOA); and the revised Botswana Institute of Accountants Act that established the Botswana Institute of Chartered Accountants (BICA) qualification.
Ms Makgolo joins the revenue service at a critical time when the fiscal position of the country has deteriorated and new measures required to transform the revenue service into a modern revenue authority capable of increasing collection of domestic revenues. The Ministry is convinced that Ms Makgolo possesses the requisite competencies to enhance the performance of BURS.
She has served in various boards/Committees locally and internationally, including Morupule Coal Mine Rehabilitation Trust Fund; Botswana Institute of Chartered Accountants Public Sector Committee; Botswana Unified Revenue Service Board; African Confederation of Cooperative Savings and Credit Association and the International Public Sector Accounting Standards Board.
